HOW TO MOVE AROUND IN KOCHI

AutoRickshaw

The Minimum charge will be Rs 8/- up to a distance of 1.5 km beyond which the rate per running kilometer will be Rs 4.50. If the travelling is between 11 pm and 5 am an additional cost of 50% shall be levied. No tip is excepted by the drivers, also pre-paid point-to-point autorickshaw services are avialble in Ernakulam Jn. Railway Station,Ernakulam Town Railway Station and Ernakulam KSRTC bus stand.

Complaints,if any, against autorickshaws can be lodged at telephone 1099.

Tourist Cabs

Tourist cabs minimum charge for Rs.70 for one hour or Rs.5 per kilometer which ever is in the higher side will be applicable. Though the above charges do exist, taxis are unmetered and thus fares must be hired from car rent companies.

Private City Buses

The most common mode of transport, these buses are very crowded during the peak hours and in this case the passenger should beware of pickpockets. Minimum fare is Rs 2.50.

State Transport Buses

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation operates shuttle, long-distance and interstate express and super fast services from the KSRTC bus station. Also available from here are interstate services of the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations. Kochi is well connected by national highways with the rest of the country. These are NH 17(Ernakulam- Mumbai) NH 47(Kanyakumari - Salem), and NH 49 (Kochi-Madurai).

Long-distance Private Buses

Long-distance private buses are available from stands at Kaloor, High Court junction, and Ernakulam South. Interstate services are also run by luxury coach operators.

Boats

Services of the Kerala Shipping & Inland Navigation Corporation, the state Water Transport Authority, and of private ownership are available from the Bolgatty Ferry and the main jetty at Park Avenue to various places. The junkar ferry for the transhipment of vehicles and passengers are operated between Ernakulam and Vypin, and between Vypin and Fort Kochi.

Railway

Kochi is connected to various parts of the country by the Indian Railways, the largest Railway system in Asia. Trains are accessible from Ernakulam Junction (Reservation Enquiry: 371132; Timings: 8 am to 8 pm, Sundays till 2 pm), Ernakulam Town, and Kochi Harbour Terminus railway stations.

Air Ways

International flights are operated from and to the Cochin International Airport, located 25 kms northeast of the city at Nedumbassery. Destinations include Abu Dhabi,Baharin, Dhaharan, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait, Muscat, and Sharjah. Domestic flights services are operated by the Indian Airlines and Jet Airways. Air-India and Indian Airlines are the national carriers.
